Cranly, like Mulligan, was once (in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) one of Stephen's best friends, but since fell out of favor after Stephen questions his integrity (a pattern with Stephen; like Mulligan, Cranly had counseled Stephen to complete an Easter ritual to please his mother even though Stephen is no longer sure he is a believer).
