Mulligan's rescue of a drowning man will be discussed later in the novel; for all that Stephen feels morally superior to the British-toadying Mulligan, he recognizes he would not have been brave enough to save the man's life. I believe Mulligan's real-life counter-part Gogarty might have similarly piqued Joyce with heroics, though I need to track down a reference to this.
