A dactyl is a set of three syllables, where the first one is stressed, and the other two unstressed: MAL-a-chi, MULL-i-gan. 'Century', 'customer', 'devastate' etc are all dactyls: it's a way of describing stress and rhythm in poetry, especially classical verse.
