The traditional answer to this antique riddle was "In the dark" or later "Down in the cellar eating sauerkraut"

In episode 17 (p662ff) we'll see Bloom writing at a table with two drawers in the center of the livingroom, but that seems like the place for their dining table, not his writingtable.
